4 Incredible Day Trips From Kathmandu

Bhaktapur

Distance from Kathmandu 15km / Travel time, up to 45 minutes.

Entrance Fee, foreigner: 1,800 Rs.

Bhaktapur is a city that will transport you back in time with its well-preserved medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and a visible sense of history. Bhaktapur is one of the most interesting day trips from Kathmandu because it’s like stepping into a living museum.

As you stroll through Bhaktapur’s labyrinthine streets, you’ll encounter the stunning Durbar Square. This UNESCO World Heritage site is located in the heart of the city. Durbar Square has intricately carved temples and palaces, standing as a testament to the craftsmanship of the Newar people.

Bhaktapur is also famous for its vibrant pottery industry, and you can witness skilled workers shaping clay into beautiful pottery with traditional techniques.

Of course, a visit to Bhaktapur wouldn’t be incomplete without trying some of the local dishes. Bhaktapur is renowned for its mouthwatering Newari cuisine. My favourite local specialties are veg momo (dumplings) and bara (fried lentil patties).

Kirtipur

Distance from Kathmandu 10km / Travel time, up to 30 minutes.

Entrance Fee: Free

Kirtipur is a hidden treasure and only a stone’s throw away from Kathmandu. I’d been to Nepal 7 times before I’d even heard of Kirtipur and now it’s one of the day trips from Kathmandu I recommend the most.

This quaint town, perched on a hill, offers an amazing blend of history, culture, and breathtaking views of the surrounding valley and snow-covered mountains. Unlike the bustling streets of Kathmandu, Kirtipur has managed to preserve its tranquil ambience, making it an ideal escape for a day of exploring.

A day trip to Kirtipur is best spent strolling through the narrow lanes, past the well-preserved Newari architecture, street art and ancient temples. The town’s centrepiece is the Bagh Bhairab Temple, a stunning pagoda-style structure dedicated to the ferocious deity Bhairab. The temple’s terrace has panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley and on a clear day, you’ll be able to see the mountains in the distance. One of the best parts of any day trip from Kathmandu.

Make sure you also walk across the Kirtipur Suspension Bridge, a link between two neighbourhoods and a great opportunity for photos.

This scenic location is the perfect place for a break and I have no doubt there’ll be a local food stall close by where you can sample delicious local snacks like Pani Puri.

In a nutshell, Kirtipur is a charming destination that offers a tranquil respite and a dose of culture on your day trip from Kathmandu. With its rich history and stunning scenery, it’s a hidden gem that’s well worth the short drive.

Shivapuri National Park

Distance from Kathmandu 10km / Travel time, up to 30 minutes.

Entrance Fee, foreigner: 1,000 Rs.

Surrounding the Kathmandu Valley, Shivapuri National Park is a nature lover’s paradise. Being the closest National Park to the city it’s a fantastic option as a day trip from Kathmandu. This lush haven offers a refreshing escape from the city’s hustle & bustle and is perfect for those seeking a breath of fresh air away from the city.

The star attraction of Shivapuri National Park is its namesake peak, Shivapuri itself. A hike to its summit rewards you with stunning panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley and (on a clear day) the Langtang Himalayan mountain ranges.

To book a guide and private day tour hiking in Shivapuri, I recommend this Get Your Guide tour if you’re up for the challenge.

Shivapuri National Park is very well protected by Nepal’s army and while exploring the park’s winding trails, you’ll encounter diverse plant life including Nepal’s national flower, the rhododendrons. Plus, various bird species and possibly langur monkeys swinging through the trees. And if you’re really lucky, you might spot some rare wildlife like leopards and Himalayan black bears.

Shivapuri National Park is a green oasis right on the doorstep of Kathmandu. Offering a perfect blend of adventure, tranquillity, and natural beauty for your day trip from Kathmandu. If you don’t have the energy or budget to explore deep into the national park, another great option is visiting the Jamchen Vijaya Stupa. This stupa has free entry and sits at the foothill of Shivapuri National Park (so you don’t need to pay the entrance fee to the National Park either). The stupa is a relatively easy, 1-hour hike from the Budhanilkantha Temple.

Chandragiri Hills

Distance from Kathmandu 14km / Travel time, up to 45 minutes.

Cable Car return, foreigner: $22 USD

One of the more modern day trips from Kathmandu that combines adventure and breathtaking views has to be Chandragiri Hills and its bright red cable car ride. This unique destination opened in 2016 and offers an escape from Kathmandu city life.

The highlight of Chandragiri Hills is undoubtedly the cable car. Which takes you up to the hill’s summit with panoramic views of the Himalayas (on a clear day), lush forests, and the Kathmandu Valley below. It’s a really fun experience that’s both exciting and serene. Plus, it’s a great option if you’re travelling as a family.

Once at the top, you’ll find the Chandragiri Hills Resort, a beautiful oasis where you can relax and enjoy a delicious meal. Plus soak in the stunning views. The resort also boasts a beautiful temple dedicated to Bhaleshwor Mahadev, adding a spiritual touch to your day trip.

Nagarkot

Distance from Kathmandu 32 km / Travel time, up to 1 hour.

Nagarkot is the perfect weekend getaway from Kathmandu, especially for first-time visitors. Why? It’s only a short drive from the city, and you can wake up to the incredible sight of the sun rising over the Himalayas. This charming hill station offers a breath of fresh air and stunning panoramic views that leave you speechless.

Two days in Nagarkot is a delightful retreat from the crazy streets of Kathmandu. But it’s also possible to visit Nagarkot as a day trip from Kathmandu, assuming you’re happy to get up early enough to make it before sunrise.

Although I do highly recommend spending at least 1 night in this peaceful little village. As the sun sets behind the majestic Himalayas, you’ll be treated to a mesmerizing sight that paints the sky with shades of orange and pink.

Many of the hotels in Nagarkot have accessible rooftops for viewing the mountains. The property I’ve visited multiple times over the years and would recommend above all is Hotel Viewpoint. By far the best location and from the rooftop there are uninterrupted views of the Himalayas.

Besides the amazing mountain views, there’s also a range of outdoor activities. Hiking trails crisscross the area, inviting you to explore the lush forests and terraced fields. Plus, local villages, small temples, and plenty of local restaurants.

The Last Resort

Tucked away in the dense jungle of Nepal, The Last Resort is the ultimate weekend escape for adventure enthusiasts looking for a thrill. This eco-friendly haven is perched on the edge of the wild Bhote Kosi River and offers an adrenaline-pumping escape like no other.

The Last Resort is renowned for its heart-pounding adventures. Including bungee jumping from a suspension bridge, 160 meters above the river, The Canyon Swing which is one of the highest in the world and abseiling down a waterfall. Or if you’re not quite ready to take the leap, you can still enjoy the excitement by watching others take the plunge while drinking at the resort’s scenic bar.

So whether you’re seeking an adrenaline rush or a tranquil escape, The Last Resort is an ideal destination for an unforgettable weekend getaway from Kathmandu that will leave you with stories to tell for a lifetime.

Trishuli River Rafting from Kathmandu

Distance from Kathmandu 75 km / Travel time, up to 3 hours.

Another one of those weekend getaways from Kathmandu that is packed with adventure is rafting on the Trishuli River.

Trishuli River, with its rushing waters and stunning canyons, offers an ideal playground for both novice and experienced rafters. The day-long adventure takes you through exhilarating rapids, each with its own unique name and personality, making for an unforgettable ride.

And trust me on this, the ride I had is definitely one I will never forget. I did this trip back in 2009 and while going through some questionable rapids, our boat capsized and I was dragged underwater by these wild rapids. I felt like I was underwater for ages & and literally thought I was going to die! Eventually, I popped up unharmed and our guide pulled me back to safety. At that point, I was very pleased with myself for actually listening during the earlier safety briefing.

But it’s not all about adrenaline; the calm stretches between rapids provide ample opportunity to soak in Nepal’s scenery of lush valleys and terraced rice fields.

This is the most popular white water rafting tour in Nepal and after a thrilling day on the river, you can sit back and relax on the banks of the river, resting up to do it all again tomorrow.

Get Your Guide has many 1-day Trishuli River Rafting trips

But as this is one of the best weekend getaways from Kathmandu, I recommend speaking with a local travel agent in Thamel about booking a 2-day trip for you.
