If you’re searching for unique places to stay in Ubud, I might have the perfect spot for you. During my recent trip to Bali, I stayed at Menzel Ubud Bali. This peaceful hideaway is tucked among the rice fields and is just outside the centre of Ubud (you could even walk).
Menzel isn’t your typical hotel; it felt more like a villa retreat, complete with traditional Balinese architecture, lush gardens, and a real sense of calm. In this post, I’ll share my honest thoughts and photos so you can decide if Menzel will be right for you while staying in Ubud.
*This was not a sponsored stay; I just genuinely loved my time at Menzel and know you will too*
More About Menzel Ubud Bali
Menzel Ubud Bali is a 4-star, boutique-style property that has 29 rooms that are all tucked away among the lush gardens. But still only a short drive from the centre of Ubud. Menzel Ubud offers a peaceful escape that could be just what you need.
The hotel was built in 2019 and is surrounded by palm trees and rice fields, giving it a real “hidden gem” vibe while still being close enough to pop into town for dinner or shopping. The property blends Balinese architecture with natural textures, think thatched roofs, carved wood, and stone pathways. Which gives it a warm, village-like atmosphere. So if you’re keen to relax by your private pool or dine under the palms, I feel like the whole place was designed to help you slow down and unwind.

What Makes Menzel Ubud Unique?
What made Menzel Ubud feel like one of the most unique places to stay in Ubud? For me, it was the blend of private villa comfort and hotel-style service. We had our own space, own pool, and privacy, but also access to the restaurant & spa, daily housekeeping, and friendly staff on hand when needed.
It’s the best of both worlds. And unlike a lot of boutique villas in Ubud, this one won’t blow your budget. Plus, it’s close enough to the centre of Ubud to enjoy the shops and cafes. A Grab from the hotel to the centre of Ubud only ever cost a couple of dollars, and we never waited for more than a few minutes for the car to arrive.
So Menzel’s unique location offers convenience plus, far enough out of town to still feel peace and be surrounded by nature.
Staying in Ubud: Why Location Matters
When it comes to staying in Ubud, location can really make or break your experience. Ubud is known for its charm and lush surroundings, but it’s now also known for traffic that can be painfully slow. If you stay too far from the centre, you might find yourself stuck in a jam every time you want to grab a coffee or explore the town. That’s why the centre of Ubud is such a popular base. It’s where you’ll find some of Ubud’s most iconic cafes and restaurants, boutique shopping, and a strong sense of local culture, from temple ceremonies to traditional art.
One of the reasons I loved Menzel Ubud so much is that you feel worlds away from any traffic chaos, and when you do want to visit town, it’s only a short drive (or scooter) away. Or, you can actually walk into town from the property.
If you’re looking for unique places to stay in Ubud that offer both serenity and convenience, this location hits the sweet spot.

Villa Accommodation in Ubud: What You Can Expect at Menzel.
So, I’m assuming you’re after a peaceful and character-filled villa accommodation in Ubud? I found Menzel to be a standout option.
I stayed in the villa named Gowa (there are no room numbers here, only names, which I loved), and it was incredibly comfortable and had a uniquely Balinese feel. The furniture’s rustic charm fits the environment perfectly. From the bold wooden bed frame, generous mosquito net, and touches like a desk area, a cupboard, and a small fridge.
The bathroom had an open window looking straight out to the rice terraces, so you won’t miss out on the view if you decide to take a bath.
At the back of the villa, double doors opened onto a private deck with a table and chairs, and just beyond that, the best part, a plunge pool that was our private oasis.
If you’re searching for an Ubud villa with a private pool that also offers stunning views (so many villas have you boxed in, surrounded by concrete walls), Menzel has you covered. Even though the hotel’s restaurant and main pool are located across the rice fields, the distance made everything feel private.
You really could spend all day in your pool enjoying the green views. Plus, I’m convinced our villa had one of the best views on the property. The whole space had this relaxed, intimate vibe, like you were part of nature but still had all the comforts of home.
Hotel Facilities and Service
One of the things that set Menzel apart for me and made it one of the truly unique places to stay in Ubud was the warm, welcoming service. While friendly locals are part of what makes Bali so amazing, the staff at Menzel were next level: kind, attentive, and always happy to help.
Each day started with a generous and delicious breakfast (not a buffet but still plenty of options). And, a couple of times, we stayed in for dinner thanks to the amazing menu and relaxed vibe of the on-site restaurant. One night, we were even treated to traditional Balinese dancing during dinner. Which was a lovely touch, and my daughter especially enjoyed the performance.
If you have a “Bali floating breakfast” on your bucket list, Menzel will be even more perfect for you. The staff can deliver your breakfast directly to your pool, at a time that suits, and display it beautifully with flowers. Menzel only has two floating baskets, so I would recommend booking this a couple of days in advance to ensure its availability. They do charge extra for your breakfast to be floating (I, for some reason, didn’t write this down), but I think it was 25,000 IDR.
Also, the villa was cleaned daily, and the on-site spa was a bonus. I only visited once, but it was relaxing, and conveniently close to our villa. Everything struck the perfect balance between the independence you want from a private villa and the little comforts you get from a great hotel.
How Much Does It Cost to Stay at Menzel Ubud?
Another thing that makes Menzel one of the more unique places to stay in Ubud is the range of room types available. I believe there would be something to suit most budgets without sacrificing atmosphere or style.
Agoda states that the average price per night starts from $138 AUD. The Ethnic One-Bedroom Villa is what I stayed in and paid $202 AUD per night.
When I was browsing other villa accommodations in Ubud on Agoda and Booking.com, I noticed that similar places were either around the same price or significantly more expensive.
What’s great about Menzel is that if you’re travelling in a group and not everyone has the same budget, they also offer more affordable options like ‘basic double rooms’ for roughly $100 AUD. These still look beautifully designed, and are only steps from the main pool & restaurant.

More Unique Places to Stay in Ubud
If you would like to compare a few more properties in Ubud before booking, here are some other highly rated stays in Ubud that still seem to offer the unique vibes you’re after;
This property looks stunning, it’s closer to Tegallalang Rice Terrace than the centre of Ubud. They also have private villas with a pool. But just a bit more expensive compared with Menzel. And, looking at their photos, there are vast views of the surrounding rice fields.
Komaneka at Rasa Sayang Ubud Hotel
This property is in a great location, just up the road from Ubud Sacred Monkey Forrest. They have an outdoor and indoor pool, but no rooms with a private pool.
This resort is a little bit further away from the centre of Ubud compared to Menzel, but still in a pretty good location. The rooms are much more modern, with less of a traditional Balinese vibe. And, they offer rooms with or without a private pool.
Final Thoughts on Menzel Ubud and Why Unique Accommodation Is the Way to Go
Staying at Menzel Ubud reminded me why I always gravitate toward unique accommodations when I travel, especially in a place as special as Bali. There’s something so memorable about having your own space, own pool, and waking up to views that don’t feel mass-produced.
Menzel Ubud offers all the character and charm of a private villa, with the bonus of hotel comforts like daily housekeeping, on-site restaurant, and genuinely warm service.
It’s not just about finding a place to sleep, it’s about finding somewhere you’re excited to go back to at the end of the day or happy to spend a lazy morning in. And if you’re planning a trip to Bali and want something more personal, more peaceful, and more memorable, I truly think Menzel Ubud is worth checking out.
I hope this guide has made your decision on where to stay in Ubud super easy.
I certainly can’t wait to go back!
