When travelling in Spain I know it’s hard to imagine stepping away from the tapas bars and stunning beaches, but let’s not forget that just a short drive inland you can find incredible mountain scenery, ancient villages and a glimpse into a more traditional Spanish life. Guadalest is the most visited village in Spain. So, during your stay in the Alicante region, I can promise you that a Guadalest day trip is the perfect addition to your itinerary.
Guadalest is a charming village with stunning views, a rich history, and it gives you a chance to explore an 11th-century castle. So keep reading as I dive into everything you need to know about a Guadalest day trip.
Where is Guadalest Village and How to Get There?
Guadalest village is located perfectly between the Aitana and Xortá mountain ranges in the Provence of Alicante.
If you plan to take a day trip to Guadalest from Alicante the best (but not the only) option is to hire a car. This scenic drive from Alicante city takes about an hour and is relatively straightforward.
From Alicante city take the A-70 north towards Valencia for 36km then exit 65 towards Benidorm. Then follow the CV-70 inland through a bunch of roundabouts onto CV-755 before arriving at Guadalest.
Parking can be found near the entrance to Guadalest Village. There are 3 large car parks and it only costs 2 euros for all-day parking.
Inside the village is “car-free”, so all the beautiful cobblestone streets are pedestrian-only.
Guide to Guadalest Day Trip (from Alicante)
I know for many that driving in a foreign country (potentially on the other side of the road) is not at all appealing, but that doesn’t mean you need to miss out on the beauty of Guadalest.
There are several Guadalest day trips available and they most often start from Alicante or Benidorm. And, sometimes include a visit to nearby Algar Waterfalls.

Things To Do In Guadalest
A Guadalest day trip shouldn’t be rushed, take your time to soak in the village’s unique atmosphere and incredible viewpoints.
As you arrive at the village and pass through the impressive entrance to the upper area, you’ll quickly notice how well-preserved this ancient village is!
The main plaza has stunning views of the Reservoir and the water is the most beautiful color blue. The area isn’t huge but has a few shops and restaurants inside small picturesque buildings. On the side of the main plaza is a long bench seat, allowing you to stop and admire the view of the reservoir.
Some of the best things to do in Guadalest include;
The Castle of San Jose also known as the Castell de Guadalest, is the most popular site for people during their Guadalest day trip. Perched high on a steep rock, Castell de Guadalest offers even better views of the surrounding valley, reservoir, and the bell tower.
This iconic fortress impresses visitors with its well-preserved history & architecture. Plus, on the highest point in the village and a part of the castle complex is a small cemetery.
To enter the castle and adjoining museum follow the signs to Casa Orduña, the entrance fee is 4 euros and it’s a self-guided tour of the castle.
The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is located in the centre of town and is worth a quick look. The inside is simple but still beautiful and displays original elements.
Throughout Guadalest village there are many historical museums including the medieval torture museum. This gives a unique chance to see instruments that they used to torture people in the Middle Ages. This museum was rather confronting and I just thanked my lucky stars I wasn’t around back then.
After seeing the main sites, stroll the charming cobblestone streets lined with local shops selling handmade crafts & souvenirs.
Other Things To Do In Guadalest
Beyond exploring Castell de Guadalest, the area offers a variety of other activities to enhance your Guadalest day trip.
You could go for a swim in the stunning blue water of Guadalest Reservoir. To reach the reservoir from Guadalest village follow a narrow road called Calle la Era down to a small parking lot, and then follow the clear path to the reservoir.
For those who enjoy outdoor adventures, the nearby Aitana and Xortá mountain ranges offer excellent hiking trails and opportunities to connect with the Spanish countryside. The trails vary in distance and required skill level but I’m sure all offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Can you walk around Guadalest Reservoir?
Yes, there is a 9.3km loop trail around the reservoir and most of the trail is paved.
Can you swim in Guadalest Valley?
Sure can, you can swim in Embalse de Guadalest (Guadalest Reservoir). There’s no entry fee and a swim would be very refreshing after exploring Guadalest Village. We visited in May and the water was freezing.
And, during peak season you will also have the opportunity to hire canoes and stand-up paddle boards.
Can you see Guadalest for free?
Yes. You can walk around and visit the shops of the lower and upper village for free. Once you reach the beginning of the upper village you will see a sign on your right side for Casa Orduña and this is where you pay and enter the museum and castle if you choose.
Tips For Visiting Guadalest Valley
Guadalest Castle is open every day from 10:00 – 20:00. Although I would suggest double-checking this if you plan to visit on a public holiday.
Arrive Early, to avoid the crowds and make the most of your Guadalest day trip, aim to arrive before 10 am.
Wear Comfortable Shoes, the village’s steep, cobblestone streets are best navigated in comfortable walking shoes. And, definitely essential if planning to do any of the nearby hiking trails.
Don’t forget your camera! The views are stunning, so make sure your camera or smartphone is fully charged to capture the scenery.
Sun Protection, I know this can be easily forgotten but during this Guadalest day trip you’ll be spending lots of time outside so a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are important to protect yourself from the strong Mediterranean sun.
Plan for a Swim, just in case bring along everything you’ll need for a swim. You wouldn’t want to miss out on this unique opportunity simply because you forgot your bathers.
Local Souvenirs, if you’re doing any shopping look out for locally-made crafts and products unique to this part of Spain.
If travelling with young children I wouldn’t recommend taking a pram (stroller), there are so many stairs throughout Guadalest village so it would become a real hassle.
And, of course, respect local customs. Be mindful of the local customs to ensure a respectful and enjoyable visit, remember this village is also people’s home.
