How to Get From Bali to Nusa Lembongan: What’s The Best Way?

Getting from Bali to Nusa Lembongan is quick and easy, but knowing the best way to travel can save you time and hassle. This small island off the east coast of Bali is a favourite for those looking for clear waters, laid-back vibes, and great snorkelling spots. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the best transport options, what to expect on the journey, and tips for a smooth trip—so you can spend less time figuring out logistics and more time enjoying Nusa Lembongan.

How to Get from Bali to Nusa Lembongan

When it comes to getting from Bali to Nusa Lembongan, you’ve really only got two options—public boats or fast boats from Sanur. But if you ask me, there’s only one option worth considering.

Public boats are traditional wooden outriggers (jukung) that take around 90 minutes and only run once daily, depending on the weather. Tickets are cheaper (100,000 IDR), but these boats are uncomfortable, overcrowded, and lack proper safety standards.

I once took a similar boat from Lombok to Gili Trawangan, and even in calm weather, the ride was rocky and not enjoyable. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re travelling with kids or just want a stress-free journey.

Besides, there’s very little information available about these public boats, and they’re not a common choice for tourists. They’re unreliable, and even if you’re on a budget, this isn’t the place to cut costs.

The best way to travel from Bali to Nusa Lembongan is by fast boat from Sanur harbour, which takes around 40 minutes. Multiple ferry companies operate throughout the day, offering a safer, faster, and more reliable journey—definitely the way to go!

Fast Boat from Bali to Nusa Lembongan

The fastest and most convenient way to travel from Bali to Nusa Lembongan is by fast boat, with multiple departures daily from Sanur, crossing the Badung Strait. If you’re coming from Canggu, expect the drive to Sanur’s boat harbour to take around an hour, but I’d allow extra time—Bali’s traffic is terrible, especially in the afternoon.

Several ferry companies operate on this route, including Rocky Fast Cruise, D’Camel Fast Ferry, Scoot Fast Cruises, and Arthamas Express. Tickets start from IDR 150,000, and children under two can travel free on a parent’s lap. Each passenger is allowed 20kg of luggage, and I also travelled with a port-a-cot and small pram, which wasn’t an issue.

If your ticket doesn’t include a transfer, I recommend pre-booking a local driver or using Grab or Gojek to ensure you arrive on time. The ferry companies suggest checking in one hour before departure, but in reality, 30–40 minutes is plenty. Check-in locations are small offices along the road leading to the terminal. If you’re walking, it’ll take no more than 5 minutes to reach the ferry terminal after you’ve checked in. Or, if your booking includes hotel pickup, your driver will take you there first.

Once checked in, you’ll receive a ticket and a lanyard or wristband—both are important, so don’t lose them. The Sanur ferry terminal opened in 2022 and has a jetty for boarding, so you won’t have to wade through the water.

However, once you reach Nusa Lembongan, only Rocky Fast Cruise docks at a pier. The other ferries drop passengers at Jungutbatu Beach or Mushroom Bay Beach, where you’ll need to climb out into the water. Depending on the tide, it could be ankle-deep or up to your knees—something to keep in mind when choosing your boat!

Best Fast Boat to Nusa Lembongan

If you want the easiest and most hassle-free way to get from Bali to Nusa Lembongan, Rocky Fast Cruise is the way to go. They’re the only company that offers a jetty-to-jetty service, meaning you won’t have to climb out into the water when you arrive. This was particularly important for me as I was travelling with a toddler—I like to keep things as simple as possible.

Rocky Fast Cruise departs from Sanur at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, and 17:00, with return trips from Nusa Lembongan at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, and 16:00.

Tickets start at IDR 275,000, or IDR 325,000 if you include hotel transfers. Their team is also super organized—they contacted me via WhatsApp to confirm my booking and pick-up details, which was helpful and reassuring.

When you arrive in Nusa Lembongan, you’ll dock at Rocky’s private jetty in Telatak Village, on the island’s east side. It’s right next to their beach club (which is currently closed), making it a smooth arrival process. Once you disembark, you’ll need to collect your luggage, even if your ticket includes a hotel transfer. From there, Rocky’s team will help direct you to your transfer vehicle.

For anyone, but particularly families, this is hands-down the best option—the trip is short, the process is easy, and you don’t have to worry about juggling kids and luggage while stepping into the ocean. If you’re heading to Nusa Lembongan, this is the only fast boat I’d recommend.

Tips for a Smooth Trip to Nusa Lembongan

Book your tickets in advance (at least a few days prior) – Fast boats can fill up quickly, especially in peak season. Booking online ensures you get your preferred day and departure time.

Mornings are best for travel – Bali’s weather is generally calmer earlier in the day, meaning smoother conditions and fewer delays.

The ride can be bumpy – The trip is short, but the waters of Badung Strait can get choppy. If you’re prone to seasickness, take motion sickness tablets beforehand.

Porters are available at the terminal – If you need help with luggage, porters can carry your bags to the boat, but unless this service is included in your ticket, they’ll expect a tip.

Arrive 30–40 minutes before departure – While most companies recommend an hour, I personally think that’s excessive. There’s not much to do at the terminal, and seating can be limited.

Check your WhatsApp for updates – Many ferry operators, including Rocky Fast Cruise, will message you with confirmation details and pickup times, so keep an eye on your phone.

Wear easy-to-remove footwear – If your boat drops you at the beach, you may need to step into the water when disembarking.

Don’t overpack – The luggage allowance is typically 20kg per person, but if you’re bringing extra items like a pram or port-a-cot, most companies are accommodating.

And, always keep smaller, personal items with you on board.

What to Expect When Arriving in Nusa Lembongan

Arrival location depends on your boat company – If you’re travelling with Rocky Fast Cruise, as I mentioned you’ll dock at their private jetty in Telatak Village. This is on the east side of the island and further away from most hotels, restaurants, and main areas, so it’s best to book a ferry ticket that includes a transfer.

I waited around 10 minutes for my hotel transfer once disembarked. Thankfully, there’s a covered waiting area with tables and chairs, plus a small store selling snacks and drinks.

Then the drive to your hotel only takes around 15 minutes, depending on its exact location.

Staying on Nusa Ceningan? Rocky can also organise transfers to drop you at the Yellow Bridge, where you will then need to walk or take a scooter taxi across to the island.

If you arrive at Jungutbatu Beach or Mushroom Bay – For those travelling with other ferry companies, you’ll disembark directly onto the beach. But the staff will get your luggage off the boat, safely onto the beach. Then if your hotel isn’t within walking distance, there are heaps of local taxis waiting nearby.

Now that you have arrived it’s time to relax and start exploring the stunning Nusa Lembongan.

Travelling Back to Bali from Nusa Lembongan

Heading back to Bali from Nusa Lembongan is just as easy as getting there—just in reverse. If you booked a round-trip ticket with your ferry company, you’ll just need to confirm your departure /pick-up time. But if you travelled over on a one-way ticket, it’s best to secure your return trip online as soon as you know your plans.

On the day of departure, if you’re making your own way to the ferry, arrive at least 30–40 minutes early to check-in. The staff will direct you where to go, and like before, you’ll be given a ticket and a lanyard or wristband—both are important, so don’t lose them! Once the boat is ready, you’ll board and enjoy the short 40-minute ride across the Badung Strait back to Sanur.

When you arrive in Sanur (you’ll probably instantly miss the slower pace), if you still need to sort transport to your hotel or the airport, just remember that Grab and Gojek drivers aren’t allowed inside the ferry terminal. This area is reserved for local taxi drivers only.

So, you can either negotiate a fixed-price ride with one of the many local taxi drivers waiting out the front of the terminal or, if you have data on your phone, walk out to the main road and book a Grab or Gojek from there.

My Final Thoughts on Traveling from Bali to Nusa Lembongan

It’s amazing how getting from Bali to Nusa Lembongan is so quick and easy. While there are a few ferry companies to choose from, I highly recommend Rocky Fast Cruise for its jetty-to-jetty service, which means no wading through the water when you arrive. The trip only takes around 40 minutes, and if you book a ticket that includes transfers, getting to and from the ferry terminal is even easier.

Nusa Lembongan is the perfect addition to your Bali itinerary. It has a completely different vibe but still the same warmth and kindness from the locals. The beaches here are amazing and the slower pace of life will have you savouring your morning coffee more than usual.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much! Last time I did this trip they’d upgraded the Sanur terminal so you didn’t get your feet wet. But I didn’t know there was an option for a jetty drop off on Lembongan!
