Melbourne CBD and the Yarra River on a sunny day / Places to visit in Victoria

Victoria is the place to be if you want to experience the best sporting events in Australia, the incredible culture in Melbourne, amazing food, along with the fun nightlife. Plus unique country towns, famous coastal roads, and even snow-covered mountains. At the bottom of this page, there are links to all A World To Live’s travel guides on places to visit in Victoria.

Victoria is known for having very cold weather during winter, so it helps that Melbourne is where you’ll find the best coffee in Australia and many of the outdoor restaurants & bars have heating.

Then, on the other hand, summer in Victoria is absolutely amazing! There can be continuous days where the temperature reaches over 40 degrees celsius. And because winters are harsh in Victoria I find that as soon as the warm weather arrives everyone is outside enjoying every moment.

Facts About Victoria, Australia

Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria and is only a few kilometers from Port Phillip Bay.

There are wild penguins in Melbourne! They can be easily spotted in St Kilda, just have a look around the pier you’ll see the ‘Little Penguins’ (usually close by the rocks).

Melbourne CBD is very easy to navigate, the streets are basically a grid system so it’s hard to get lost or end up going in circles. And apart from the main streets, everyone needs to take time to explore the famous laneways in Melbourne.

The most famous road in Victoria is the Great Ocean Road. The road runs for 664km, along the beautiful coastline and winding through small surf towns. (And you’ll find the famous Bells Beach along here too). The road starts in Torquay and finishes in Allansford.

Victoria’s landmass is 228,000 square kilometers, so it’s roughly the same size as the United Kingdom.

Some of the Best Places to Visit in Victoria

A lot of the places I would recommend visiting in Victoria can be very weather dependent. Apart from Melbourne city, which can be enjoyed any time of year, for the others, I will separate into winter & summer lists as a general guide.

Summer or warm weather;

The Great Ocean Road
Morning Peninsula (including Flinders and Cairns Bay Rock Pool)
St Kilda
Echuca (Murray River Region)
Ballarat
Grampians
Yarra Valley

Winter or cooler weather;

Mount Buller
Dandenong Rangers
Bright
Daylesford & the Macedon Rangers

Planning Your Transport in Victoria

The main airport in Melbourne and also one of the biggest in Australia is Melbourne Tullamarine (MEL). This airport operates domestic & international flights. From the airport, the CBD is an easy 25-minute drive or the Skybus operates express, every 15 minutes from the airport to the city.

The next biggest airport in Victoria is Avalon (AVV), prior to 2020 this also operated 1 international flight with Air Asia but these days only operates domestic services. Avalon airport is further away from Melbourne but much closer to Geelong and the Great Ocean Road.

There are also a number of small regional airports in Victoria but as the state isn’t that big and for the price, you’ll pay to fly into these small towns, you’d be better off driving.

A road trip around Victoria would definitely be the way to go! For car hire, prices are usually pretty reasonable, plus having your own car will give you the freedom to explore many of the country towns or small beaches along the Mornington Peninsula.

There is also the option to get public transport, Victoria has a very good regional train line and these trains leave from Southern Cross station in the city. Click here for the V/Line website.
