When people search for the “best rice terraces in Bali”, it’s no surprise that Tegallalang Rice Terraces come up again and again. But are they really the best? In this post, I’ll share what it’s actually like to visit, answer the most common questions, and walk you through how to plan a relaxed and rewarding day trip to Tegallalang. From wandering the scenic Abian Des Rice Terrace to having lunch nearby. Let me share my experiences and show you exactly how to make the most of your time.
So What Is Tegallalang Rice Terrace
Tegallalang is a lush, rural area located north of Ubud in Bali. While many people refer to the entire area as “Tegallalang Rice Terraces,” the famous rice fields are actually just one part of the wider district. These rice terraces are a stunning example of Bali’s natural beauty and farming culture. These layered green steps carved into the hillside have become one of Bali’s most iconic sights.
So why are Tegallalang Rice Terraces so popular? I believe it’s a mix of things: the rice terraces are very well maintained, easy to access, and the area is full of scenic viewpoints. If you’re after photos, an easy hike, or just want to take in the landscape from one of the many cafés, Tegallalang ticks all the boxes.
What is it Like to Visit Tegallalang Rice Terraces
I highly recommend adding a day trip to Tegallalang to your Bali itinerary, especially if you’re staying in Ubud. It’s an easy 30-minute drive from the centre of Ubud. But if you’re staying in other parts of Bali like Seminyak or Canggu (although the drive is more like 2 hours), this day trip is the chance to experience one of the island’s most beautiful landscapes.
You can expect a mix of peaceful green views, hillside paths, activities like the famous Bali Swing and a whole lot of fun photo ops. If you time your visit right, you can enjoy the area before the crowds roll in and explore at your own pace.

A Day Trip to Tegallalang Rice Terraces (best rice terraces in Bali?)
Start at Abian Des Rice Terrace
Abian Desa Rice Terrace is a privately managed part of the rice terrace area within Tegallalang. It’s relatively well known and can get busy, so I would suggest arriving as early as you can. But it’s also very big, so people can easily spread out.
I’ve been here a couple of times and really love it. The reason I recommend Abian Desa Rice Terrace is that you almost have everything in one spot. Visitors are free to wander through the rice terraces, take in the stunning views and (for additional cost) there are the famous Bali Swings, plus, Zip Line, Superman Zip Line and Sky Bike.
There’s a café on-site, but I’d suggest saving your appetite for lunch elsewhere. The views here are great, but the food isn’t a highlight.
There’s an entrance fee of only IDR 25,000 per person, and once you’ve paid, you’re free to explore without constant donation requests (I’ll talk more about that below) as you walk.
Next, Lunch at Tis Cafe
Tis Cafe is one of the best spots for lunch in the area. With its unique design and amazing views over the Tegallalang Rice Terraces. It’s a spacious, beautifully designed café with a pool, heaps of photo spots, and plenty of seating. And, of course, the food and drinks menu is perfection.
There’s also a car park just up the road. This is for your driver to use, and when you’re leaving, the staff will notify your driver that you’re ready.
Other Cafés with a View?
If you’d prefer somewhere more low-key for lunch, or want to stop again for drinks with a view. The main road through Tegallalang is lined with cafés and restaurants, each offering slightly different perspectives of the terraces below. Some are simple warungs, others are all about photo opportunities, so take your pick depending on your style and budget.
A Note on Walking and Safety
Some parts of the road can be narrow and there aren’t always footpaths, so take care, especially if you’re walking between cafes or viewpoints.

FAQs About Visiting Tegallalang Rice Terraces
How Much Time Do You Need To Visit Tegallalang Rice Terraces?
One day is more than enough to explore Tegallalang. If you start early, you can enjoy the terraces, grab lunch with a view, and be back at your accommodation by early afternoon. Which is perfect if it’s been one of those hot and humid Bali days.
How to Get There from Ubud
From Ubud you’ve got a few great options:
Scooter – great if you’re confident driving in Bali traffic.
Private driver – the easiest and most comfortable option for sure. Especially if you’re travelling with others and splitting the cost, it will ensure it’s also affordable.
Grab – easily available from Ubud, but less reliable for your return trip. Getting picked up from the Tegallalang area is possible, but you will obviously need a SIM or wifi to connect with a driver when you’re ready to leave.
Then, from Seminyak/Canggu area, the best option is a private driver. Hire someone for the day so they will stay and wait around for you.
Is Tegallalang Rice Terraces Overly Touristy?
Yes and no. Tegallalang is a well-known tourist spot, and you will see plenty of other visitors, the swings, photo stations, and signs catering to tourism. But the area is large enough that it’s still easy to find a quiet patch to walk, take photos, or sit and soak in the scenery.
Are the Tegallalang Rice Terraces the Best Rice Terraces in Bali?
I can’t say for sure that they’re the best because I haven’t visited every rice terrace in Bali. But they’re certainly one of the most famous for a reason. The scenery is stunning, the area is well-maintained, and it’s incredibly easy to reach, especially from Ubud.
Also, in my opinion, the best views in Tegallalang are from higher up, so either from the roadside or one of the many cafés. Although walking through the terraces is beautiful and worth doing, it’s those wide, sweeping views of the layered green hills that really make this place special.
Is Tegallalang worth visiting?
Sure is! It’s easy to get to, incredibly photogenic, and gives you a real taste of Bali’s rural charm.
What’s the difference between Tegallalang and Jatiluwih Rice Terraces?
Jatiluwih is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is much larger, quieter, and more rural than Tegallalang. It’s perfect for long walks and fewer crowds. Tegallalang is smaller, more tourist-friendly, and easier to visit on a quick day trip.
Can you walk through the Tegallalang Rice Terraces?
Yes! Look for signs that say “Rice Trekking” along the main road. Stairs will take you down into the terraces. You’ll likely come across locals asking for donations. I’d say IDR 5,000 to 10,000 is appropriate. So bring small notes, as you may pass multiple checkpoints. And, remember this isn’t a scam, it’s helping local villages who keep this area beautiful and allow you to explore their land.
When is the best time to go to Tegallalang Rice Terraces?
Time of day: Morning is best for light, cooler temperatures, and (slightly) fewer people. Avoid midday, as it’ll be way too hot!
Time of year: The rice is usually at its greenest during the growing season, which is just before the harvest (this typically happens in May-July), so March /April is the perfect time to go. But I’ve also been in September, and the rice terraces were equally beautiful.
What should I take with me?
* Water
* Hat or umbrella
* Sunscreen
* Comfortable shoes for walking (such as Birkenstocks, as they’re also suitable for the hot weather)
* Small notes for donations or parking
Also, if you’re wondering about staying connected in Bali, I tried BaliSIM on my last trip and it made things ridiculously easy. I uploaded my ID and set everything up at home, and it automatically activated when I landed. No airport SIM queues, no stress. I had strong signal the whole trip and never ran out of data.
My Overall Experience at Tegallalang Rice Terraces
Tegallalang is definitely worth adding to your Bali itinerary. It might not be the hidden gem anymore, but it’s still incredibly beautiful and surprisingly peaceful in parts, especially if you go early. I’ve explored this area twice now and love it. Starting the day Abian Des Rice Terrace, wandering the fields, getting the best photos, & having a swing. Then, relaxing over lunch at Tis Cafe or one of the other spots close by! It really is the best addition to a Bali itinerary. And, even though I won’t claim it’s the best rice terrace in Bali, it’s certainly one of the most accessible and memorable.
