Best Guide For Planning a Cruise on Halong Bay in Beautiful Northern Vietnam

Halong Bay in Northern Vietnam is definitely one of those places that will take your breath away. Despite the crowds, Halong Bay should be a part of any Vietnam itinerary and booking a cruise on Halong Bay is the best way to experience this unique landscape.

Keep reading if you’re putting together your Vietnam itinerary because this guide includes all the must-know information about a Halong Bay overnight cruise.

About Halong Bay

Halong Bay covers an area of 43,400 hectares and has over 1600 islands and inlets. Also, since 1994 Halong bay has been a Unesco World Heritage-listed site. The landscape is so stunning, with limestone pillars & cliffs, covered in a lush rainforest. Plus if you’re lucky enough you will spot some Hornbills flying above.

Located in the Gulf of Tonkin, Halong Bay is approximately 170km from Vietnam’s capital city Hanoi.

Why Cruise Halong Bay

There is basically no better way to experience Halong Bay than by being on the water. To slowly cruise right passed the steep rocky cliffs gives you the best opportunity to take in all the natural beauty. Then of course there are many opportunities to get off your boat and enjoy some of the activities around Halong Bay like hiking, kayaking and exploring the caves.

One Night Halong Bay Cruise

During my trip to Vietnam in June 2022, I booked a 2 day, 1 night Halong Bay cruise with Bikudo Travel, and I was so happy with the service and the booking process was a breeze.

Fantasea was the name of our boat. It was nice but looked older compared to some others. The room was massive though, with a private bathroom and a large bed. Also, there was no balcony but large windows that open giving amazing views.

Before leaving Hanoi I was in two minds as to how this trip would go. I had a few people say to me that Halong Bay is a tourist trip, too crowded and very polluted. Although, I always love to see things for myself so was always going to go anyway but my expectations weren’t overly high.

That changed as soon as we left Tuan Chau Harbor, it’s seriously impressive! Of course, there are other cruises on the water, but it never felt busy or as if we were sailing through a traffic jam.

Over the two days, I did see a little bit of rubbish in the water but unfortunately, this can be a common site in some parts of Southeast Asia.

Our guide did say that the rubbish used to be much worse, and has improved since the government relocated a local floating village.

Halong Bay’s Floating Village

Up until about 5 years ago, there was a self-sufficient floating fishing village living in Halong Bay. This village had lived in Halong Bay for generations and created a community on the water, even including a school for their children.

But the Vietnamese government basically forced this community to relocate inland. The Government insisted that people’s quality of life, particularly the children’s education would improve and their environmental impact was also a big factor.

As with the rest of the world, the use of plastic and other non-biodegradable waste was on the rise. A lot of this trash ended up on the water. So, people who visited Halong Bay in the past and said it was full of rubbish, may have visited before the village was relocated.

Thankfully now the pollution isn’t so much of an issue in Halong Bay and this natural beauty will be well preserved for generations to come.

Cruise Itinerary

Day 1

The tour will include hotel pick-up from Hanoi and a bus transfer to the Tuan Chau Harbor. The drive from Hanoi to the harbour is 3.5 hours, there’s a newer freeway that would only take only 2.5 hours but not all tours would go this route as the toll roads are expensive.

Once arriving at Tuan Chau Harbor there wasn’t much waiting around before we got on a small boat to transfer everyone out to Fantasea. Then the staff served lunch after we’d checked into our rooms.

The first afternoon was busy with Kayaking in Luon Cave, visiting Titop Island to swim at the beach and climbing the 400 steps up to the island’s lookout point. The views from the lookout were stunning, 360-degree views of Halong Bay.

Afterwards back to our boat for sunset drinks on the deck, lessons in making spring rolls and dinner. After dinner, there will also be the opportunity for squid fishing and karaoke if you’re up for it (our guide was more excited about the karaoke than anyone else Lol).

Day 2

The second day of our Halong Bay Cruise was meant to start at 05:30 am with a Tai Chi class on the top deck, but the pouring rain put a stop to that.

After breakfast, the rain eased and we headed to the Sung Sot Cave. This cave system is incredible and far exceeds my expectations. The caves are massive and even with all the other boast arriving at the same time the cave never felt cramped.

By late morning we were back on the boat to check out of our rooms, have lunch and then transferred back to Hanoi.

Advertised as 2 day 1 night, in actual fact, you’re on the boat for less than 24 hours. The tour does go over two days but this includes travel to and from Hanoi.

What The Cruise Includes

Prices for a 1 night 2 day cruise on Halong Bay are upwards of 80USD. These tours include nearly everything such as; all meals, accommodation, transfers, guide and entrance fees to Halong Bay.

What the price doesn’t include is drinks, tips & any extra activities you do. I would also recommend bringing cash on the cruise with you as well (Vietnamese Dong or USD).

When I read drinks aren’t included I assumed they just meant alcohol, but this also includes drinking water! So a good tip is to buy enough drinking water in Hanoi for the cruise. Once you arrive at the boat harbour there aren’t any shops around and the bottles of water sold at the harbour are much more expensive.

Also, I just want to mention how delicious all the food was! There was so much variety and no one ever went hungry. I’m vegan and when booking this trip I advised Bikudo Travel and the staff on the boat was well aware of this when I arrived. I was so impressed with everything I was served. Being Vegan certainly didn’t mean I was served less than everybody else.

There is also complimentary wifi on board but the further into Halong Bay you travel the worse the wifi signal will get.

If you’d like to book your Halong Bay cruise with Bikudo Travel, check out their website, or they’re always quick to reply to DMs on Instagram.

Other Activities Around Halong Bay

Visit Cat Ba Island – this is Halong Bay’s largest island and there are heaps of accommodation options here if you wanted to spend the night on land.

Kayak at Bai Tu Long – this area is located on the outskirts of Halong Bay and is still considered off the beaten path as not all the cruise ships will stop here.

Snorkle at Van Gio Island, Cong Do Island or Trai Cave – all these spots are considered great for snorkeling and diving.

Halong Bay Day Trip

If you don’t have the time or budget to book a Halong Bay overnight cruise, luckily that doesn’t mean you’d have to miss out altogether. There is the option to book a day trip to Halong Bay from Hanoi.

A day trip will include some of the best activities around Halong Bay and give you a glimpse of the incredible scenery.

GetYourGuide has a highly-rated day trip from Hanoi which includes kayaking in Luon Cave, which was my favourite activity.

Although, if you can, a cruise on Halong Bay for at least one night is the best way to experience this beautiful part of Northern Vietnam.

Other Cruise Options on Halong Bay

You definitely get what you pay for when it comes to a cruise on Halong Bay. Although many of the activities are the same regardless of which boat you are on, the boats themselves vary a lot.

Below I’ll link to a few more options for booking a cruise on Halong Bay. Ranging from luxury to backpackers and the cruise I did was mid-range.

Many companies also offer a 2-night Halong Bay cruise. I don’t particularly think 2 nights is necessary, as you do see heaps during a 2 day 1 night cruise. But also it would be so nice having an extra night. Halong Bay is really a world of its own and the extra time to switch off and be surrounded by such stunning scenery would be so nice!

In Conclusion

Any time we travel it’s so important to experience places for ourselves and not always listen to the negative opinions of others. I’m so glad I did this with Halong Bay. I didn’t find it overly busy or even polluted. It’s a beautiful part of Vietnam and a cruise on Halong Bay should be on everyone’s itinerary.

In this post, I covered what to expect with a 1 night Halong Bay cruise and what is generally included in your tour.

I hope you found this helpful in planning your trip to Vietnam and please share this post with anyone you know who is considering a trip to Halong Bay.

What an amazing experience. That is a bummer about trash in the water, but I guess you go expecting that that’s how it is. And how interesting about the floating village being relocated. I’m glad that helped the trash problem at least a bit!
